Siena Water Polo fell to Villanova 17-12 in the team's final match of the Bucknell Invite on Sunday. Siena scored seven goals in the opening quarter but could not maintain the lead as Villanova surged with 12 goals in the second and third quarters combined.
Siena has an overall record of 3-6. Villanova has an overall record of 7-4.
Quincy Frommelt led the Siena offense with four goals.
Rebecca Currie also contributed significantly by posting two goals, as did
Georgia Ellison.
Catherine Williamson excelled in the sprint, winning two sprint-offs during the match.
Siena started strong with Frommelt scoring early and
Lucia Fernandez Caballero adding another, putting them ahead 2-0. Villanova responded with a goal but Siena extended its lead with three consecutive goals, including Frommelt's second, making it 5-1.
Villanova kept the game close by scoring twice in the final minute of the first quarter, closing the gap to 6-3. In the second quarter, Villanova went on a 4-1 run, tying the game at 7-7 before Siena's Frommelt scored again. Villanova dominated the third quarter, scoring six times to lead 15-8. Despite Siena's late efforts, including a goal from
Ava Pawlik in the final period, Villanova secured a 17-12 victory.
Siena will look ahead to its match with Harvard on Sunday, Mar. 8, at 10 a.m. in Cambridge, MA.
