Siena Softball earned a 6–2 win over Charleston Southern on Sunday morning at CSU Softball Field, capitalizing on four Buccaneer errors and scoring in five different innings to help leave South Carolina with a second victory in the CSU Kickoff.
The Saints improved to 2–3 on the season, while Charleston Southern dropped to 0–5.
Violet Marta delivered a standout performance in the circle, tossing a complete game while allowing seven hits and two runs—only one earned—over seven innings. She did not issue a walk, struck out one, and faced 25 batters, inducing 11 fly outs and six ground outs to secure her second win of the season (2–1).
Offensively,
Chloe Cummings led the way with two hits, two RBI, and three runs scored.
Emma Petersen added two hits, one run, and one RBI, while
Megan Klein reached base three times, scored once, and stole a base.
Siena struck first in the opening inning. After Cummings drew a walk and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by
Carlie Venables, Petersen lined an RBI single through the left side to give the Saints a 1–0 lead. Charleston Southern answered in the bottom half to tie the game at 1–1.
The Saints regained the lead in the second inning as
Cali DeLawder reached on a fielding error and advanced to third, setting up a sacrifice fly by Cummings that made it 2–1. Siena then turned a key double play in the bottom of the inning to keep the Buccaneers off the board.
Siena extended its advantage in the fourth. Klein singled and stole second before Cummings drove her in with a base hit. A Charleston Southern error allowed Cummings to come around and score, pushing the lead to 4–2.
Two insurance runs came in the sixth inning. Cummings singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by
Gracie Goewey, and
Gianna DiMeglio followed with an RBI single to bring Petersen home and make it 6–2.
Marta closed the door in the seventh, retiring the side in order to seal the victory.
Up next, Siena heads to Madeira Beach, FL, to face Bellarmine on Friday, Feb. 27, at 3 p.m. for its first contest of the Make it Happen Games.
