Siena Water Polo (5-8, 2-1 MAAC) dropped a 13-9 decision to No. 21 Wagner (10-10, 3-1 MAAC) on Saturday in Poughkeepsie, NY. The Saints converted four power-play opportunities but couldn't recover from Wagner's fast start, which included six goals in the opening quarter.
Catherine Williamson powered Siena's offense with six goals, accounting for two-thirds of the team's scoring.
Lucia Fernandez Caballero and
Audrey Lacey each added a goal, while
Georgia Ellison converted a penalty shot.
Wagner set the tone early with three straight goals from Magali Ogg, Lacey Aquaro, and Catherine Mentz. Siena answered behind Williamson and stayed within striking distance, trailing 5-4 after one following Ellison's late score. The Saints rallied in the second quarter, as Williamson netted two more to help even the score at 7-7 by halftime.
The Seahawks regained control in the third, using a three-goal run—highlighted by two more scores from Ogg—to build an 11-8 advantage. Siena couldn't close the gap in the final frame despite another goal from Williamson, as Wagner secured the 13-9 final behind a late tally from Martina Parisi.
The Saints return to action Sunday, Mar. 22, against Mount St. Mary's at 11 a.m. at McCann Natatorium in Poughkeepsie.
