LOUDONVILLE, NY — Siena Water Polo (6-9, 3-2 MAAC) fell to No. 18 Marist (22-4, 6-0 MAAC) by a final score of 20-9 on Wednesday evening in the Saints' home opener at the Siena Swim Center.
Despite the result, Siena showed flashes offensively, converting two power-play opportunities and a penalty shot while facing one of the top teams in the conference.
Parker Thomas paced the Saints with a well-rounded performance, tallying two goals and two assists.
Catherine Williamson delivered a standout effort, scoring four goals on 10 shot attempts while drawing four exclusions to keep Siena within striking distance early.
Quincy Frommelt added two goals and an assist, while
Georgia Ellison chipped in two assists to help facilitate the offense.
Marist struck first with an early penalty goal, but Siena answered quickly as Frommelt buried a pair of goals off assists from Ellison and
Bianca Kennerley to take a brief 2-1 lead. The Red Foxes responded with a surge, closing the opening quarter on a 4-0 run to move ahead 5-2.
The Saints battled in the second quarter, with Williamson finding the back of the cage twice to help trim the deficit to 8-5. However, Marist began to separate in the third, using a five-goal unanswered run to extend its advantage to 15-6 and take control of the contest.
The Red Foxes maintained their momentum through the final frame, securing the 20-9 victory.
Siena returns to action on Saturday, Mar. 28, at 11 a.m. when it faces #24 Villanova at the VMI Aquatic Center in Lexington, VA. It will be the first of two matches that day, with the Saints also taking on VMI at 6:30 p.m.
