ATLANTIC CITY, NJ — Siena Women's Basketball (13-17, 11-9 MAAC) fell to Iona (20-11, 12-8 MAAC), 59-50, in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Quarterfinals Saturday at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall. The Gaels capitalized on Siena turnovers, converting them into 17 points to help secure the victory.
Nicole Melious led the Saints with 11 points, connecting on three shots from beyond the arc.
Kaiya Rain Tucker nearly recorded a double-double, finishing with nine points and a game-high 14 rebounds while adding two blocks.
Alden Yergey contributed three steals defensively, while
Valencia Fontenelle-Posson added eight points and four rebounds.
Siena opened the game with a layup from Yergey off an assist from
Caydence Hadley, and the teams traded baskets throughout the first quarter. Melious knocked down a three-pointer midway through the period, but Iona tied the game at 12-12 late in the quarter.
The Saints pulled even at 20 late in the second quarter after Yergey converted a fast-break layup following a steal. However, the Gaels regained the lead in the closing moments to take a 22-20 advantage into halftime.
Siena tied the game early in the third quarter on a jumper from Tucker, and Melious followed with a three-pointer to give the Saints a brief lead. Iona responded with a run to regain control and carried a 41-37 lead into the fourth.
Fontenelle-Posson helped Siena stay within reach in the final quarter with a layup and a three-pointer, but the Gaels maintained their advantage at the free-throw line down the stretch to secure the 59-50 result.
