Siena Softball (5-8, 1-2) fell to Sacred Heart (4-11, 2-1), 7-0, on Sunday afternoon in Fairfield, CT, in game three of Siena's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opening series.
 
Violet Marta surrendered four hits and three runs while striking out one batter in three innings. Gracie Goewey tossed three innings in relief, allowing four hits and three runs while issuing one walk.
 
Goewey also led the Saints at the plate, finishing with two hits in three at-bats, including a double. Chloe Cummings and Gianna DiMeglio each added a hit, while Carlie Venables recorded a single as Siena totaled five hits in the contest.
 
Sacred Heart struck first in the opening inning when Charlene Davis singled to left field to score Elle Leckrone, giving the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.
 
The Pioneers extended their advantage in the third inning as Davis delivered a bases-clearing double to right-center, plating three runs — two of them unearned — to push the lead to 4-0.
 
Sacred Heart added three more runs in the fifth inning. Cierra Bender scored on an RBI single from Davis, and Jess Brown later crossed the plate following a sacrifice fly and a throwing error, extending the margin to 7-0.
 
Siena returns to action Wednesday, Mar. 11 when the Saints travel to face UAlbany for a pair starting at 2 p.m.
