Siena Softball (21-11, 12-4 MAAC) delivered one of its most explosive offensive performances of the season, rolling past UAlbany (17-15, 7-5) in a 12–2 run-rule victory in five innings on Tuesday at UAlbany Field.
The Saints erupted for season highs in both runs (12) and hits (16) despite the shortened game, marking their highest hit total since a 17-hit performance against Iona on Apr. 15, 2022, and their most runs scored since plating 23 at Delaware State on Mar. 24, 2022. Siena piled up extra-base hits all afternoon, launching four home runs and adding four doubles in a relentless offensive showing.
Emma Petersen led the charge with a career day, blasting two home runs to set a new single-season career high with nine. She finished with a team-best five RBIs and two runs scored, becoming the first Saint to record a multi-home run game this season. Petersen has now homered five times against UAlbany in four meetings this year.
Chloe Cummings matched her career high with four hits while scoring three times and driving in three runs, continuing her standout offensive stretch.
Gracie Goewey helped her own cause with three hits, including a two-run homer in the fifth inning, finishing with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Cali DeLawder also went deep as part of Siena's four-homer output, while adding two hits.
Siena wasted no time setting the tone. In the opening inning, Petersen launched a three-run homer to right field to give the Saints an early 3–0 advantage. The offense only intensified in the second, as Cummings delivered a two-RBI single before Petersen struck again with her second homer of the day, pushing the lead to 7–0.
The Saints continued to pour it on in the third inning, highlighted by DeLawder's solo shot and another RBI from Cummings to extend the margin to 9–0. Siena added a run in the fourth on an RBI double from
Ella Milante, before UAlbany answered with two runs to make it 10–2.
Any hopes of a comeback were quickly erased in the fifth, when Goewey crushed a two-run homer to cap the scoring and enforce the run rule.
In the circle, Goewey earned the win after tossing four innings, allowing two runs on five hits while walking two.
Violet Marta closed the door with a scoreless fifth, surrendering no hits.
Siena will look to carry its momentum into the weekend when it travels to face Fairfield on Saturday, Apr. 18 at 1 p.m. at Alumni Softball Field in Fairfield, CT.
