Christian Waugh was featured Monday evening on CNN Headline News. The 11-year old fifth grader who attends St. Catherine of Siena in Albany, has become a national name after serving as a beat reporter for the Colonie Spotlight at Siena basketball games this year.
Waugh was credentialed this past season at the urging of the local weekly paper, and his presence in the press room quickly drew local and regional coverage. Last month, the associated press wrote a feature story on Waugh, sparking national interest from such programs as Good Morning America.
Over the course of the season, Waugh made an appearnce on WFAN Radio in New York on the Mike and the Mad Dog Show before traveling to Trenton, N.J. to cover the Saints in the MAAC Tournament.
His 500-word stories appeared bi-weekly in the Spotlight over the winter illuminating Siena basketball's glorious and embarrasing moments. The editorial pieces were unedited and told from his 11-year old viewpoint.
Head Basketball Coach Rob Lanier told The Evangelist in a recent interview: "He's actually a pretty good student of the game. He makes an effort to try to see what's going on beyond the ball going in the basket, whereas a lot of people don't see the game beyond what's happening with the ball. That's hard to do. It says a lot about his interest in the game and the depth of his thinking."
