Loudonville, N.Y. - The 2003 Saints Alive! Shootout, presented by Albany International, has become the trademark fundraising event for Siena Athletics. The growth and support of the event over the past seven years shows the strength and future of Saints Alive! and Siena athletics. This year's event was no exception raising over $22,000 for Siena's sports medicine, directly impacting each of Siena's over 400 student-athletes.
The event is characterized as one of the premier sports and entertainment outings in the Capital Region because of the prominence of Siena's athletic teams and the distinctive post round Shootout. "This event will continue to grow and be the special day it is because of the strength of Siena's support system. The over 135 golfers and 75 businesses represented here today are proof that our community understands the importance of helping Siena athletics grow" said tournament director and Assistant Athletic Director Jamie Mathews.
The event featured numerous exciting additions to the tournament that kept golfers entertained at every turn. One of the most popular events was "Beat the Coach". Siena Men's Basketball Coach Rob Lanier challenged golfers to beat his shot for a prize. Coach Lanier as well as all the Siena coaches played an active role in the day.
The tournament was followed by the distinctive and enormously popular post-round Shootout. This year a familiar group from the Siena family took home the Shootout title. Jack Curry '54, Tom Pottenburgh '55, Chuck Brady and Ed Roeser held off all challengers to earn the designation of Shootout champions, and earn $1000 for the women's tennis program in the process.
The day was capped off by a cocktail reception and dinner including a silent auction packed with a Florida vacation, limo and tickets to the Siena vs. Syracuse game this year, sports memorabilia, and much, much more.
The participants are looking forward to next year's Shootout and the enjoyment that comes with it. As the athletic department continues to grow, so does the Saints Alive! Shootout.
Siena Athletics would like to give special thanks to Albany International, the events presenting Sponsor as well as the event sponsors: Caldwell Banker Executive Cleaning, First Cardinal, Fleet Bank, GE IT Solutions, Morgan Stanley, Rose & Kiernan and Smith Industries.
