Siena College will soon be the proud owner of an artificial turf field. The school broke ground on the project this week after receiving approval from the Town of Colonie. The multi-use, all-weather field will be used as a venue for lacrosse, field hockey and soccer, as well as numerous intramural sports.
"We are thrilled to break ground on this important project," director of athletics John D'Argenio said. "The field will help our coaches recruit top student athletes and help our teams better prepare for their season. The entire College will benefit from the use of this field, as it will be an important component in our intramural program as well."
There project includes bleacher seating for 1,000, as well as a press box, scoreboard, box office and terrace area. The facility will be a great enhancement to the school's field availability, and extend teams' ability to practice and play outdoors longer in the fall and earlier in the spring.
The $2.9 million project will be financed through the College and the generosity of individual donors. Clough Harbour & Associates is serving as the design firm, and Clark Companies will be handling the construction. The artificial surface will be FieldTurf's monofilament product, which is the latest generation in turf surfaces. The project will be done in two phases, with the field itself targeted for completion around Thanksgiving and the finishing touches being completed in the spring of 2007.
Coaches and student athletes have anxiously been awaiting the construction of the field and look forward to the advantages they'll enjoy from the new, state-of-the-art surface. The facility will be home not only for varsity athletics, but for all Siena students and the entire community.
