Former team captain and four-year Siena Women's Swimming and Diving letterwinner Maggie Davenport '19 was named the seventh head coach in program history in July 2024.
“We’re excited to welcome Maggie home to lead our Siena Women’s Swimming and Diving program,” said Siena College Vice President and Director of Athletics John D'Argenio upon Davenport's hiring. “She’s proven to be a rising young coach in the profession who has been mentored by Siena Hall of Famer Molly Chamberlain ’11, HOF ’23.”
The 27-year-old Davenport returns to her alma mater after serving for the past two seasons as an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s programs at Union. Under her tutelage, the Garnet Chargers men’s and women’s teams combined to achieve 138 lifetime best times, 112 championship finalist swims, 16 new top-10 program times, four school records, and three NCAA B cuts.
This past season, Davenport helped guide the men’s team to three new school records and ten top-10 program times, while the women’s squad tallied five top-10 program marks. Both teams each won their first four meets of the season, with the men’s program accomplishing the feat for the first time since 1966 and the women for the first time in 17 years. In 2022-23, the men’s team ranked second nationally amongst all Division III programs for the highest percentage of lifetime best swims.
“I could not be more excited to be returning home to Siena College,” said Davenport upon her appointment. “I would like to thank John D’Argenio, Andrew Santandera, and the hiring committee for trusting in me and giving me this opportunity. Siena is a very special place and this is a very special team. I’m looking forward to working with this incredible group of student athletes as we build on the strong foundation of the Siena Women’s Swimming and Diving program.”
Davenport previously served as a men’s and women’s swimming and diving assistant coach at SUNY New Paltz for the 2021-22 season, which the Kingston, New York native helped lead to a combined 10 relay team and 41 individual new top-25 program times.
Davenport has also spent the past two years locally as the head coach for the Schenectady Saratoga Sharks Swim Club and, following graduation, completed a year-long program volunteering with non-profits through the Franciscan Volunteer Ministry.
A four-year swimmer in both freestyle and breaststroke events and a team captain her senior year for the Saints, Davenport anchored both the 400-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay teams which achieved top-three finishes leading to the program’s first-ever ECAC Championship in 2015. A 2018 ECAC Academic Honor Roll selection, Davenport recorded three individual and five relay first-place finishes in 2015-16, and was part of a pair of 200-yard medley relay winning teams for the Saints in 2016-17.
A 2019 Siena College graduate with her B.S in Biology, Davenport earned her M.S. in Kinesiology from Southeastern University in 2022.
