Oneonta State freshman midfielder John McPhail (Bannockburn, Scotland) scored his first collegiate goal in the 95th minute of play to lift the Red Dragons to a 1-0 win over Siena this afternoon in men's Div. I soccer action. The win for Oneonta evens their overall record at 3-3 while the Saints fall to 1-3-1.
Oneonta controlled the entire first half of action outshooting the visitors 9-0 through the first 45 minutes. Siena goalkeeper Jonathan Hicks (Merrick, NY/Chaminade) came up with some big stops to keep the game scoreless.
In the second half, the momentum seemed to shift to the visitors as they had the edge in play despite not recording their initial shot of the match until the 57th minute. After sophomore Vinny Russo (Staten Island, NY/Marymount International) made a back save to preserve the 0-0 tie for Siena, the Saints carried the play and had the better chances to score. The best opportunity came in the 62nd minute when senior forward Kevin Purcell (Albany, NY/Guilderland) was alone in front of the Oneonta keeper and couldn't put it by as Jack Potter (Liverpool, England) came up with the stop of the game. The rest of the game was played closely as the score remained 0-0 at the end of regulation.
In the first minute of overtime, junior Ryan Rummery (Biggin Hill, England) nearly ended the game for Oneonta when he hit the post on a head redirect off a corner kick. The winning goal came when McPhail was looking to send a ball across from the left flank that deflected off a Saints defender.
Siena visits MAAC rival Manhattan on Saturday.
