Buffalo, N.Y. - Siena jumped to an early lead and cruised past Canisius 4-1 in the MAAC opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at the University of Buffalo Tournament. Jeff Lewis scored twice in the second half and Paul Ciovacco added three assists to lead the Saints to victory.
Kevin Purcell got the scoring started for the Saints (1-1-1, 1-0-0 MAAC) just over eight minutes in when he beat Canisius goalie Dave Borchard in the open field. Siena put the game away with three goals in an 18-minute span in the second half. Freshman Tom Santoro scored his first collegiate goal to extend the lead to 2-0. Lewis added a pair of goals just under 10 minutes apart to seal the victory for the Green and Gold. Ciovacco assisted on all three second half goals.
Goalkeeper Ryan Jordan made just one save in the win for Siena. The Saints outshot the Golden Griffins 14-4.
The Saints play the host school, Buffalo, on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. before opening the home schedule on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. against Central Connecticut.
