ALBANY, N.Y. - Senior swingman Dwayne Archbold scored a game-high 28 points as Siena (9-12/6-3 MAAC) coasted to a 79-71 win over Iona (8-12/5-4) in front of 5, 949 fans at Pepsi Arena Monday afternoon. The Saints shot 52% from the field compared to just 33% for the Gaels.
The first half was one of runs. The Saints began the game on an 11-2 spurt, but the Gaels quickly responded with a 10-0 run of their own to take a 12-2 lead-their only lead of the game. Later in the period, Siena out-scored Iona 15-4 over a four-minute stretch, building as large as a 14-point lead. The Saints led 41-29 at the break.
Siena stretched their advantage to 19 just four minutes into the second half. Austin Andrews connected on one of his four three-pointers to give Siena that lead. Andrews finished with a career-best 18 points. Brent Sniezyk added 10 for the victors
Justin Miller gave Siena its biggest lead, 55-32, with a three-pointer from the top-of-the-key at the 13:10 mark.
Courtney Fields scored 10 of his team-high 15 points from the free-throw line to lead the Gaels. Iona closed to within six late in the game thanks in part to the efforts of Dyree Wilson who finished with 10 points.
The Saints connected on 58% of their three-point attempts after entering the game shooting just 33% from beyond the three-point arc.
Archbold, who has scored 20 points or more in five of Siena's last seven games, moved into the top-10 on Siena's all-time scoring chart in the win.
The game was the second half of a MAAC double-header at Pepsi Arena. St. Peter's defeated Canisius 62-51 in the first game. Siena returns to action on Saturday evening at Niagara. Game-time is set for 7 p.m.
