ALBANY, N.Y. - David Bennett's layup with 1:16 remaining gave the Red Foxes a one-point lead that held up as Marist (19-8/13-5 MAAC) rallied from an 11 point second half deficit to defeat Siena (12-19/9-9) 60-57 in front of a senior day crowd of 9,323 fans at Pepsi Arena Saturday night. Austin Andrews' three-point attempt at the buzzer rimmed preserving the win for Marist. By virtue of the loss, Siena lost a chance at a first round bye in next week's MAAC Tournament. Siena, the 7 seed in the Tournament will take on the 10 seed St. Peter's in a semifinal on Friday.
The Saints controlled the first half action from the opening tip, racing to a 15-5 lead just eight minutes into the game. Tommy Mitchell's three-pointer capped off the run, but the Red Foxes answered right back with a 19-9 spurt of their own to knot the game at 24-24.
Senior guard Sean Kennedy scored all 10 of his first half points during the spurt. The Saints, however, closed the half on a 13-3 run to take another 10-point lead to the locker room. Archbold led eight Siena scorers with 11 at the intermission.
After Siena built a 41-30 lead moments into the second half, began to chip away. Kennedy led all Marist scorers with 15, Bennet added 13. Dwayne Archbold had 16 points to pace Siena, senior classmate Andy Cavo added 14.
Marist took its first lead of the game, 54-53 with 4:36 remaining on an alley-oop dunk from Kennedy to Matt Tullis. The lead then alternated between the two squads until Bennett's deciding layup.
