Present: Nate Maloney, John D'Argenio, Colleen Price, PJ Brun, and Ned Jones
Committee met to review report on gender equity drafted by PJ Brun and Nate Maloney.
PJ reviewed the first three questions of the report and found evidence that we have and continue to meet the spirit and criteria outlined in the gender equity plan.
Ned Jones asked about problems in implementation of the required plan that was drafted in response to the NCAA's initial review. PJ indicated that no problems were uncovered and further stated that it was impressive to take a look back between the initial certification and today and see what has been accomplished in this area. Their report demonstrates this in numerous ways.
Nate reviewed items 5 and 6. Indicated that the institution, from the administrative organization on a college wide level to the organization at the departmental level, is well set up to advance gender equity. He reported that the EADA forms , indicate a trend that could have presented an inequity had the college decided not to drop football. However, both Nate and PJ noted that the trend is now going in the opposite direction and we need to continue to monitor carefully the female balance.
Nate noted that monitoring questions remained outstanding. He would interview further college personnel to address this question (including Human Resources.)
Ned recommended that the campus committee on athletics minutes be reviewed to see how/if the group monitors progress.
John indicated that the Athletic Department Annual Reports, submitted to Fr. Jim Toal, would provide evidence of monitoring
Also Cynthia King-Leroy should be contacted in her role as title IX officer.
Nate indicated that the EADA documents revealed no differences on his first review, but also stated that further study of the document would be required before the report is completed. All coaches within similar tiers had faced the same types of issues.
PJ asked about the last three-year EADA report. She said that she did not have it...John indicated that once it is done, we could get a copy.
Nate asked if we had to include the reports for EADA - Ned indicated yes.
John also indicated some changes could be in the current year report. It will be helpful to see that we continue to meet the requirements.
PJ asked if the financial reporting on EADA is based on what is allocated or what is spent. John noted it reflects what was spent. Further, John indicated that items purchased by players are not reflected on the EADA. But was uncertain if the expenses that came through the department, but paid for by the students were covered by the report. John told PJ she should clarify this with Theresa Wenzl.
Ned asked the group to review question number 7 to more fully describe each item. The group will report back on this.
Nate raised question about equity and outside funding to pay men's basketball coach. He indicated that he would note that such practice was typical in the industry and not unique to Siena.
Recommendation on training services needed to be reviewed. Ned indicated that the current review may be appropriate for welfare...it was not appropriate for gender equity. Nate and PJ indicated that no gender inequity evidence was uncovered. John indicated that a consultation on medical services is being completed and will be made available after January 1.
Ned raised similar issue with publicity and support services. Ned recommended that Nate re-interview Jason to ensure gender equity was being met. PJ asked about marketing ads for Women's Basketball. John reports that he thinks ads exits, but will double check. Nate asked if Pepsi or Siena promoted the men's basketball team. John indicated it was Siena.
John did indicate that the marketing budgets for both teams should be reviewed for equity, rather than specific action items to market the teams.
Nate reported that support services are mostly completed at the assistant coach level and an equitable allocation of time among the sports (by gender) was apparent.
Nate reported that once football has been eliminated from the equation, budgets for recruiting become equal. The EADA report has specific details by sport and budget line.
Nate and PJ will revise their report and submit.
Meeting adjourned 4:40 pm
