Haddix Powers Siena Past Canisius 78-72

Michael Haddix scored 23 points and pulled down 10 rebounds as Siena defeated Canisius 78-72 before 6,307 fans at Albany's Pepsi Arena Thursday night. Justin Miller also had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds for the victors, while Antoine Jordan narrowly missed out on a triple-double with 15 points, nine assists and eight rebounds.

Toby Foster led Canisius (10-18/5-12 MAAC) with 21 points. Kevin Downey has 17 and Jon Ferris 14 in a losing effort.

The Golden Griffins controlled the action for most of an exciting first half, building as large as an eight-point advantage, 31-23. Siena scored 14 of the half's final 20 points to knot things up 37-37 at the intermission.

Siena (11-15/8-9) started the second half with a 9-2 lead to build a 46-39 lead at the 16:10 mark. Canisius rallied to tie the game at 49-49 on a Downey jumper with 12:35 left.

After the Saints spurted to their largest advantage of the game 71-62 with just 3:35 left, the Golden Griffins again rallied to make thing interesting.

Downey's second free throw cut the lead to 71-68 with 1:22 remaining and Chuck Harris' jumper again trimmed the lead to three with just 28 seconds left.

Siena converted three of four free throws to seal the deal.

The Saints close out regular-season play against Fairfield Saturday at 7 p.m.
