LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Matt Phelps has been named strength and conditioning coach at Siena College, Athletic Director John D'Argenio made the announcement today. Phelps graduated from Siena in 2002 and is in the process of completing his master's degree in applied exercise science at Springfield College in Massachusetts. Phelps served as a volunteer assistant strength coach at Siena from January through May of 2003. He assisted in the instruction and supervision of Siena's 400 student-athletes, designing and implementing training programs for several teams. Following his stint as a volunteer at his alma mater, Phelps was an intern at Springfield College where he assisted in speed and agility workouts for the women's field hockey and volleyball teams. This past season, he served as a facility manager and fitness consultant at American International College in Springfield. In that capacity, he oversaw athlete workouts and supervised the weight room. Phelps received a bachelor's degree in English from Siena in 2002. His brother Jon recently accepted a post on the men's basketball staff. "We're pleased to have Matt on board as we prepare for the upcoming sports season," D'Argenio said. "Our coaches have come to rely heavily on this position, and we feel Matt is more than up to the task."
