May 11, 2004
Attendance: Nate Maloney, Donna McIntosh, Colleen Price, PJ Braun, John D'Argenio, Ned Jones
Meeting called to order at 2pm.
Meeting's agenda focused on a review any questions the working groups have about their area and to discuss how to best gather related evidence.
Gender Equity (Nate Maloney and PJ Brun)
We reviewed that item 4.1, Self-study item #1 was a requirement from the last review that the College develop a Gender Equity Plan. Nate and PJ are aware and will review progress on that plan.
PJ asked about what years to utilize in data gathering. John and Ned indicated that we would use (for all reports) 00-01, 01-02, 02-03. For Data purposes.
Welfare (Donna McIntosh and Colleen Price)
Several questions were raised. Where is the documentation supporting that Athletic Department Staff addressed via team meetings, etc, the welfare issues required. John indicated that meeting minutes, agendas, and interviews with coaches and players should help provide the documentation. Further he indicated that student signoffs on certain issues were available and the Departments Annual Operation Plan would provide some evidence, and the EADA reports with John D'Argenio and Business Affairs. The Student handbook on the web would also provide some details. Further, we discussed how to gather data on demonstrating fair treatment, implementation of policy/procedures to ensure the welfare of athletes, academic advising and welfare, etc. Again, John indicated the above steps could be followed to gather evidence to support this topic.
Student-Athlete feedback was explored. John reviewed the various ways the sub-committee could gather evidence of this. He indicated the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, Department Plan, and interviews.
What happens to data from Exit Interviews, etc? Joyce Eggleston, Academic Coordinator and SAAC members could help to provide evidence of its use.
Advising and its role. Again, John indicated the various options above to seek evidence to address issues related to student-athlete welfare.
Minority Equity
Ned and John and Alex Vazquez Primary issues are strait forward and being gathered for several other college wide projects.
Donna McIntosh strongly urged the committee, college and NCAA to reconsider the use of ethnic categories. They categories are too narrow. The committee thought we could go beyond the categories identified, so long as we met the standard and reported to the NCAA exactly the way they requested the data. It was discussed the College may be well served by a broader process.
Our next meeting will be in late September to review the data gathered by the working groups and begin to take the next step of formulating recommendations.
Meeting adjourned at 3:15 pm.
