A sold-out field of 128 golfers enjoyed a spectacular Monday afternoon with 18 holes of golf and a post-round reception, dinner and auction at the annual Saints Alive! Shootout presented by Albany International and Time Warner Cable June 20 at Shaker Ridge Country Club in Loudonville. The foursome of Fred Guzielek, Jim Hines, Jim Mraz and Phil Boshart took home the top prize as the Shootout winners.
The golf was accented by several Siena "celebrity" appearances at many holes, as golfers had the opportunity to best Head Women's Basketball Coach Gina Castelli's tee-shot at the par-3 fourth, and purchase a drive from one of Siena's top golfers at the par-5 13th. Each of Siena's coaches were on hand at many holes along with several student-athletes in what has become the department's most popular annual fund-raising event.
The distinctive Shootout, a one-hole event featuring the day's top 17 teams, took place immediately following the 18 holes of golf. Guzielek's foursome won $1,000 for the Siena volleyball program, as each of the 17 teams represented one of Siena's Division I sports programs.
Capital News 9 sports anchor Damian Andrew emceed the evening festivities following a cocktail hour and buffet dinner. The highlight was a heated live auction offering exclusive prizes including two separate one-week stays in a Hilton Head, S.C. condo, and a luxury package to the Siena vs. Syracuse game (11/25) including round-trip transportation from Albany to the Carrier Dome. An on-going silent auction also prompted spirited rivalry among the golfers, as everything from a foursome at Saratoga National, to a luxury spa day to sporting tickets were donated and then auctioned off to the highest bidder.
Walt Kicinski was the winner of the Delta Raffle, receiving two roundtrip tickets anywhere in the continental United States or the Caribbean Delta Airlines flies. A hole-in-one contest on the par-3 16th hole for a Caribbean Cruise went unclaimed.
Other winners included:
Gross Winners: Damian Andrew, Kevin Leary, Micah Ogburn and Scott Knapp; Net Winners: Dave Valentino, John Goodwin, Rick Murray and Rick Travis; 2nd Net: Mel Wilcove, Bob Belber, Stu Green and Mike Sandman; 3rd Net: Christian King, Gary Foster, John Zongrone and Steve Hart; 4th Net: AJ Battaglia, Mitch Buonaguro, Nate Maloney and Tom Donley.
All proceeds from the day benefited Siena's student-athletes.
