Final Stats
Sophomore Kelly Hummel had a match-high 11 kills and classmate April London had 32 assists and five aces to help Siena defeat Niagara 3-0 (30-16, 30-20, 30-21) in a MAAC volleyball match Sunday in Loudonville. The Saints were playing without Preseason MAAC Player of the Year Nadiege Honore who missed the contest with an injury.
With Honore on the bench and senior captain Christie Gustafson playing through a season-long abdominal injury, London distributed the ball evenly throughout the front row.
Junior Elizabeth Akin had the best match of her career adding eight kills and no errors in 17 attack attempts (.471). Gustafson also had eight kills, while freshman defensive specialist Kaui Robello snuck forward for seven kills. London dumped five kills in nine attempts and middle hitter Janine Pesusich had three kills in juts six attempts.
The Saints (5-7/2-0 MAAC) posted 13 aces, controlling the game behind the service of London and junior Jessica Hackett. Hummel added three aces. Gustafson (playing on her birthday) and Kathi Kobayashi each had two. Niagara collected just two aces as a team. The Saints also out-blocked the Purple Eagles 9-4. Freshman Burgandy McCurty led the way with three block assists.
Maurin Lawrence led Niagara with 10 kills in just 20 attempts. Three Purple Eagles(2-6/0-2 MAAC) posted five kills. Libero Sara Mancini collected a match-high 23 digs for Niagara. Robello led the Saints with 11.
