Loudonville, N.Y. - The Siena men's soccer team dropped its conference matchup with Canisius (3-7-0, 2-0-0) 3-2 this evening in Buffalo, N.Y. The Golden Griffins used sophomore midfielder Alan McGreal's goal off a penalty kick in the 84th minute to get past Siena (4-6-2, 1-2-0) in heartbreaking fashion.
The Saints got on the board first when freshman defender Nick Viaggio notched his second goal of the season just 4:28 into the contest. Viaggio evaded a Canisius defender and placed a shot into the back of the net.
In the 24th minute, the Golden Griffins evened the contest when McGreal served one to Sean Vella who connected on his first goal of the 2007 campaign. The squads entered intermission locked at 1-1.
Canisus came out firing in the second half outshooting Siena 13-7. At the 68:57 mark, Chris Carpenter gave the Golden Griffins their first advantage of the game when he collected a feed from Collin Lynch and blasted it past Saints goalkeeper Steve Skonieczny.
Skonieczny saw all 90 minutes of action in net tallying three saves on the evening.
In the 77th minute, sophomore forward Anthony Tagliaferri gathered a loose ball in the box and sent a rocket into the back of the net to even the contest at 2-2. The score marked his third of the year.
With 83:06 on the clock, Canisius was granted a penalty kick due to a red card drawn by Siena senior midfielder Jason Laffin. The Golden Griffins took advantage of this opportunity as McGreal connected on the free kick marking the game winning goal.
With the loss, the Saints fall to 4-6-1 overall and 1-2-0 in MAAC play. Siena returns to action on Sunday afternoon at Niagara. Kick off is slated for 1 p.m.
