Kenny Hasbrouck scored his 1,000th career point on a free throw with four seconds left as Siena held off visiting Iona 81-76 Sunday in Albany. Hasbrouck finished with 18 points and was the Saints' third leading scorer. Edwin Ubiles had a game-high 20 points and Alex Franklin added 19 points and eight boards.
Siena took the lead for good, 13-12, on a Hasbrouck jumper with 12:38 to go in the first half. The Saints took a 42-29 lead to the lockerroom after shooting 54% from the field in the first half. Franklin had 13 points before the break. Tay Fisher and Clarence Jackson combined for four of the team's five first half 3-pointers.
Both teams employed a pressing game plan that produced 40 combined turnovers and 46 personal fouls. Iona was whistled for 30 fouls and the Saints made 31-39 free throws, a key difference in the game. Siena committed just 16 fouls and the Gaels went 11-16 from the line.
Franklin and Ubiles combined to shoot 19-23 from the free throw line.
Devon Clarke led five Gaels in double figures with 17 points. Milan Prodanovic had 16 points and Gary Springer added 13 points and nine rebounds off the bench. Kyle Camper and De'Shaune Griffin finished with 10 points a piece.
Iona got as close as three points with 15 seconds remaining on a deep 3-pointer by Camper. The Gaels shot 55% from the field in the second half, making 13-17 shots from inside the 3-point arc to claw back in the game.
It was Siena's fifth win in its last six games and the Saints improved to 2-0 in MAAC play. The team has 12 days off before returning to action December 22 against 7-1 Holy Cross here at Times Union Center.
Iona saw its two-game winning streak snapped.
