Men's Basketball Dishes Out the Hardware at Annual Awards Banquet

Siena College held its annual men's basketball awards banquet on Monday evening, April 30 at the Albany Marriott on Wolf Road. With FOX sports anchor Rich Becker serving as master of ceremonies, over 300 fans and alumni recognized the successful career of seniors John Gorman, Mousse Diop, Mike Beers, David Ryan and Michael Haddix and looked back upon the successful 2006-2007 season.

Coaches and administrators, including Siena president Fr. Kevin Mackin and Albany county executive Michael Breslin were in attendance to pay tribute to the Senior Class as well as the annual award winners.

Head coach Fran McCaffery presented all the awards, beginning with two new honors. Freshman Cory Magee was presented with the inaugural Hustle Award and classmate Edwin Ubiles received Top Newcomer honors.

The Dan Cuhna Defensive Player of the Year Award was presented to junior Tay Fisher. Fisher had 29 steals and averaged 5.0 points per game. He also shot 34% from 3-point range.

Freshman Ronald Moore won the Jim Sullivan Most Improved Player award. Moore posted the second most assists by a rookie in school history with 158. He led the team with 53 steals and averaged 7.4 points and 3.5 rebounds per game.

The Rev. Benjamin Kuhn, OFM Student Athlete Award went to senior David Ryan for the second straight year. Ryan carries a 3.0 GPA as a Psychology major. On the court, Ryan averaged 7.5 points and 4.8 rebounds pre game. He led the team, shooting 39.4% from 3-point range.

The Billy Harrell `52 Rebounder Award was presented by Billy Harrell to freshman Alex Franklin. Harrell and other members of the Saints 1950 National Catholic Invitational Championship team were on hand and received a standing ovation when recognized by president Mackin.

Franklin averaged 8.3 points and 4.9 rebounds per game off the bench for the Saints. He scored 20 points in his collegiate debut at Stanford and scored a game-high 27 points in the Saints' MAAC Championship game loss to Niagara.

Rounding out the award winners, senior Michael Haddix and sophomore Kenny Hasbrouck shared the Doc Marcelle Most Valuable Player Award. Haddix averaged 16.3 points and 7.5 rebounds per game as a senior. He was named First Team All-MAAC, MAAC All-Tournament Team and MAAC All-Academic Team. Additionally, he was selected NABC Second team All-District and a I-AAA Athletic Director National Scholar Athlete.

Hasbrouck averaged 16.0 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. He was a Second Team All-MAAC and MAAC All-Tournament team selection. All five seniors spoke to highlight the annual event.
