Loudonville, N.Y. - The Siena men's soccer team extended its winning streak to three games this afternoon as they cruised to a 3-1 victory over cross-town rival UAlbany (1-6-1) in Loudonville. It was Anthony Tagliaferri's goal in the 49th minute that sent Siena (3-2-1) past the Great Danes.
The Saints came out energized and got their offensive going early. With 15:20 on the clock, senior co-captain Jason Laffin put Siena on the scoreboard as he notched the first goal of his collegiate career. Laffin corralled a feed from Tagliaferri at the midfield, broke free of his defender and sent one into the right corner to put the Saints up 1-0.
UAlbany answered back in the 33rd minute when midfielder Don Johnson got to a loose ball in front of the goal and headed it past the charging Siena goalkeeper Steve Skonieczny.
Skonieczny delivered another solid performance thanks to the help of a stellar defensive effort by Liam Welsh, Brian Woodfield and Kevin Gluchowski. The freshman keeper tallied two saves leading to his third consecutive victory in net.
The teams entered intermission locked at 1-1.
Just 3:41 into the second half, Tagliaferri regained the lead for the Saints on a goal which proved to be the game winner. Tagliaferri got past his defender on the right side and squeezed a shot just inside the near pipe giving Siena a 2-1 advantage.
Then in the 72nd minute, red-shirt freshman Geoff Narode finished on a Laffin feed to secure a 3-1 victory.
UAlbany goalkeeper Steward Ceus earned the loss on the afternoon falling to 1-6-1 on the season.
With the victory, the Saints improve to 3-2-1 overall. Siena looks to extend its winning streak on Saturday afternoon when they square off with Holy Cross on Siena Field. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
