Kenny Hasbrouck scored 28 points and Siena shot 53% from the floor in a 79-56 MAAC win over Saint Peter's Sunday in Albany. The Saints, now 3-0 in MAAC play, host Fairfield here Tuesday night.
Raul Orta's free throw 17 seconds into play gave the Peacocks their only lead of the game. Siena used an 11-0 run to build a 21-7 early advantage and led by double digits the rest of the way.
Saint Peter's missed all six of its 3-pointers in the first half and Siena got scoring from nine different players on its way to a 38-31 lead at the break. The Saints scored the first eight points of the second half on two 3-pointers from Hasbrouck and an Edwin Ubiles layup to take a 46-21 lead.
The Peacocks got as close as 62-46 with 9:16 to go on an Orta 3-pointer, but the lead was never seriously challenged.
Orta led the visitors with 16 points. Darrell Lampley had 11 points off the bench and Todd Sowelll had 10 points and nine rebounds.
Freshman Ryan Rossiter had a career-high 12 rebounds to go along with seven points, four assists and two blocked shots matched up with the seasoned Sowell in the post. Ubiles had 13 points and has now reached double figures in all 13 games this season. Siena's starting back court of Tay Fisher and Ronald Moore each chipped in eight points.
"I thought we learned from our experience (against #2 Memphis) Thursday night," head coach Fran McCaffery said that. "Our players saw what kind of sustained effort is needed on defense from a team that's going to compete for a National Championship. We responded against a very talented offensive team with one of our top (defensive) efforts of the season."
Saint Peter's shot just 39.7% from the field after making 32% of their tries in the first half. Siena controlled a 35-33 edge in rebounding.
The Saints offense was fluid, producing 24 assists and just 11 turnovers.
