Men's Soccer Defeats Canisius 2-0

Oct. 26, 2008

Final Stats

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Anthony Tagliaferri and Sebastien Anzevui both scored goals in a 2-0 win over Canisius Sunday afternoon in Loudonville. The Saints have won six of their last seven games and sit in second place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Siena (7-6-1, 5-1) took a 1-0 lead on a goal from Anthony Tagliaferri. Senior Mike DeSimone played a cross from the end line into the penalty box where Matt Turcio hit a shot that was saved by goalkeeper Adam Miller, but the rebound went right to Tagliaferri who slammed it in the goal. It was Tagliaferri's first goal of the season.

Canisius (6-9-1, 2-3) had a quality scoring chance in the 35th minute off a corner kick. Alan McGreal played the ball to the top of the box where Victor Gonzalez ripped a shot that was labeled for the far post, but Joe Tavernese cleared it off the goal line. Gonzalez had another great shot four minutes later, but goalkeeper Steve Skonieczny made a diving save.

"It was a good team performance," said head coach Gareth Elliott. "We weathered the storm in the first half and came out strong in the second half, creating a lot of opportunities."

The Saints opened the second half by putting four of five shots on goal in the first five minutes, including a breakaway by Bobby DiFilippo. However, Miller stood tall making each save. The Green and Gold broke through at the 55:55 mark on Sebastien Anzevui's third goal of the season after a flip throw from Tavernese. The throw landed in the box and was cleared poorly up the middle where Anzevui was waiting for it. He hit a low shot from 25 yards out that beat Miller and put the Saints up 2-0.

Canisius pressured late in the game and earned a penalty kick in the 79th minute. McGreal took the shot but rang it off the middle of the crossbar and it bounced out of play.

Skonieczny recorded his fourth shutout of the season, making six saves in the win. Miller made eight saves in the loss.

"I was really impressed with Brian Woodfield today," said Elliott. "He won a lot of 50-50 balls and anchored the defensive unit."

The Saints play their last home game of the season on Saturday against Marist at 1 p.m. Siena's senior class will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.
