Saints Come up Just Short Against Wichita State

Nov. 28, 2008

Final Stats

Kenny Hasbrouck's running jumper in the lane hit the front rim as time expired allowing Wichita State to hang on for a 72-70 win over Siena in the Second Round of the Old Spice Classic Saturday at the Milk House. The Shockers rallied from 10 down with 8:33 left and shot 64% from the field in the second half.

Siena (2-2) took a 33-26 lead to the lockerroom after leading by as many as 12 in the first half following a Hasbrouck jumper with 3:10 left. The Saints limited Wichita State to just 39% from the field in the first half and forced 14 turnovers.

Still, a late rally kept the Shockers within striking distance and Siena could never put the game out of reach.

The Saints took seven double digit leads in the second half and each time Wichita State (3-2) answered with a key basket. The Shockers made 6-10 3-pointers after intermission, including four by guard Clevin Hannah who missed both of his attempts in the first half and entered the game under 30% from distance.

Hannah led Wichita State with 19 points and Toure Murry added 18. Murray's 3-pointer tied the game for the first time in the second half, 66-66, with 2:20 left. TJ Durley scored on a driving layup on the Shockers next possession and Wichita State led the rest of the way.

Siena had a chance to tie thanks to some clever clock management down the stretch. Hasbrouck drove the lane and scored to cut a three point lead to one with 11 seconds left. After Hannah made two free throws to push the advantage to 71-68, Hasbrouck again went the length of the court and drew a foul with five second to go. He made both free throws and Siena immediately fouled Durley who made 1-2 on the other end with four seconds left to set up the final play.

Hasbrouck again raced the length of the court, paused at the 3-point line to draw his defender, and then blew by for an open runner that came up just short.

Hasbrouck and junior Edwin Ubiles each scored 20 points to lead Siena. Ubiles also reached the 1,000-point plateau with a breakaway dunk early in the second half. He became the fourth fastest player in Siena's Division I history to do so, in this his 70th game.

Siena now will face the loser of tonight's game between Michigan State and Oklahoma State on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. on ESPNU.
