Saints Shake Past Loyola

Dec. 3, 2008

Final Stats

Siena used a 14-2 run with 7:29 left to break a 54-54 tie en route to a 75-68 win at Loyola Wednesday night in the first conference game of the season. The victory snapped a three-game losing skid and provided Head Coach Fran McCaffery with his 200th career victory.

Alex Franklin led the Saints (3-3, 1-0) with 21 points and made 9-12 free throws. Edwin Ubiles scored 20 points on 7-11 shooting.

Jamal Barney kept Loyola (2-6, 0-1) close with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

The Saints shot 51% from the field for the game and built a 36-28 halftime lead by limiting the Greyhounds to just 34% from the field before intermission.

Siena could have put the game away sooner, but was victimized by poor free throw shooting for the second straight game. The Saints made 21 free throws, but missed 14 - eight by the usually reliable Ubiles.

Loyola held a 38-28 advantage in rebounding and the Greyhounds clawed back in the game by shooting 53% from the floor after the break. They tied the game at 54-54 on a Brad Farrell jumped that completed a 7-0 run.

Siena began its decisive run on a Rossiter reverse layup and a Hasbrouck jumper. The Saints held Loyola without a field goal from Farrell's jumper with 7:29 left until Brian Rudolph made a layup with 2:18 remaining.

Hasbrouck finished with 13 points for the Saints and Brett Harvey had 15 for the Greyhounds to round out the double figure scorers.

Loyola shot just 3-15 from the field - a far cry from the 18 3's they Greyhounds made in an 85-56 win here last January.

Siena avoided its first four-game losing streak under McCaffery, whose 200th career win comes in his 13th season (200-166). The Saints finally return home to the Capital Region tonight, completing a nine-day, four-game road trip.

Siena hosts UAlbany at Times Union Center Saturday at 7 p.m.
