Hasbrouck Shakes Off Ghosts; Saints Down Marist in OT

Feb. 8, 2008

Final Stats

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Kenny Hasbrouck scored 35 points - one shy of his career high - and the Saints made 5-7 field goals in overtime to post a 97-88 road win at Marist before a sold out crowd and a national television audience Friday night at the McCann Center.

Hasbrouck made 14-21 field goals and 5-7 3-pointers in his best performance of the season. The junior entered the game in a prolonged shooting slump, but made big shot after big shot to secure the win. He made 6-8 field goals in the second half and 2-3 in overtime, including both 3-pointers he tried.

Marist led 69-62 with 6:54 to go, but Siena stormed back. Hasbrouck hit a 3 to close the gap to a point, and after a pair of David Devezin free throws pushed the lead back to three points, Edwin Ubiles tied the game at 71-71 with an open 3 from the right wing ith 4:10 left.

Ubiles scored 21 points and had three of Siena's 13 steals.

The two teams traded dramatic 3's in the final moments. Hasbrouck put the Saints up with a contested shot, but Ben Farmer answered with just over two minutes left to tie the game again. Tay Fisher's 3 gave Siena the lead back, but Ryan Stilphen answered with a layup and a 3-pointer to give Marist a two-point lead with 40 seconds left.

Hasbrouck followed a Ubiles miss with a game-tying layup with 15 seconds left, and Jay Gavin turned the ball over on the Red Foxes ensuing possession leading to the overtime.

Alex Franklin's layup on Siena's first overtime possession gave the Saints the lead for good. Hasbrouck's two 3-pointers pushed the lead to 89-83 with 1:50 left and the Saints made their free throws down the stretch.

Marist shot 54% from the field, but was victimized by 18 turnovers. It marked the first time Siena has won a game when allowing its opponent to shoot 50% or better from the floor since March 1, 2002 at Duquesne - a stretch of 27 games.

Gavin led the Red Foxes with 19 points. Marist controlled a 38-28 edge on the glass after being out-rebounded by the Saints 35-29 Monday in Albany. Siena's two starting post players - Franklin and Josh Duell - each fouled out in the overtime.

The win was just the second for the Saints at the McCann Center in the last nine years. Marist had won four straight in this building. It is also just the second time Siena has swept the regular-season series since the Red Foxes joined the MAAC in 1997.

Siena improved to 10-3 in the MAAC with the win, alone in second place, and 15-8 overall. The Saints will get a shot at front-runner Rider Sunday at 3 p.m. in Lawrenceville.
