TOURNAMENT NOTES
This was the first time in the tournament in Tampa that a higher seeded team has won.
VILLANOVA
- Villanova is now 22-12 on the season.
- Nova leads the series with Siena 8-3 with the two previous meetings coming in the NIT. Their last meeting ended in a 74-59 defeat in the first round on March 18, 2003 in Albany, N.Y.
- The last time Villanova advanced to the regional semifinals was in 2006. They went on to advance to the regional finals where they lost to the eventual National Champion, Florida Gators.
- Scottie Reynolds led all scorers with 25 points and had a career high eight rebounds.
- Freshman Corey Stokes registered career highs in points (20), field goals made (8) and tied his career high in steals (1).
- Villanova is 12-13 when playing as the higher seed in the NCAA Tournament and 2-1 when they are the No. 12 seed.
- This marked the third time that Villanova has played a member of the MAAC in the NCAA Tournament, with all three match ups taking place in the second round. They are 2-1 in those games.
- The win was Jay Wright's first victory against Siena (1-1)
- With Villanova's win over Clemson in the first round, the Wildcats have won at least one game in the tournament in 22-of-29 NCAA Tournament appearances.
- Sunday afternoon's game was the first postseason competition ever for Villanova in which both teams are a double digit seed.
- The No. 12 and No. 13 seeds have played six times and the No. 12 seed has now won five-of-six match ups.
- Villanova is now 15-3 when leading at the half.
- Villanova shot 62.3% (5-8) from downtown in the in the first half.
- The Wildcats started the game on a 19-5 run.
SIENA
- Siena finished the year with a 23-11 record.
- The Saints went 0-2 against the BIG EAST Conference this season (loss at Syracuse).
- Siena holds a 3-4 record all-time in the NCAA tournament
- Siena failed to reach the Regional Semifinals for the first time in school history.
- Tay Fisher moved into second place on Siena's all-time 3 pointers made chart after his shot with 11:35 remaining in the first half, passing Doremus Bennerman.
- Siena suffered its first loss of the season on a neutral court. The Saints were previously 5-0 in such games.
- Siena fell to 4-9 when trailing at halftime.
- Siena finished the year 1-4 when shooting under 40% from the field.
- Edwin Ubiles had a double-double with 12 points and a career high 12 rebounds.
- Siena shot 35.7% for the game, the third lowest of the season (Loyola 29.2% and Memphis 31.9%).
