Oct. 14, 2009

Complete Obituary

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - The Siena Athletic Department is mourning the loss of one of its ardent supporters, Ben Stowell. A nine year old from Latham, Ben lost his courageous battle with a rare form of bone cancer on Monday.

An honorary member of the Siena Water Polo team since 2006, Ben attended every home game and was in attendance at numerous team dinners. The Water Polo team first met Ben through Siena Athletics' partnership with the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Capital Region.

"The team is deeply saddened by the loss of Ben," said Head Coach Ellen Howe. "He and his family meant a great deal to our program and he will forever remain a part of the Siena Water Polo family."

Additionally, Ben struck up a friendship with men's lacrosse cancer survivor Brendan Finneran who battled the same rare form of cancer called osteo-sarcoma. Finneran was very close to Ben and his family, which visited him recently in California. Additionally, Finneran participated in a Relay for Life event with Ben.

Siena Athletics and the Stowell family ask in lieu of flowers to make donations to the Ben Fund which assists other families dealing with childhood cancers.
