The Siena swimming and diving team suffered a narrow 167-124 defeat Saturday to Vermont at the Forbush Natatorium in Burlington, Vt. The Saints captured six events during the meet, with newcomers Katie Ness and Britney Anderer each winning a pair.
"The team really swam well and showed a lot of heart and intensity and I was really proud of the effort put in today," remarked head coach Greg Brown. "This team is really on the cusp of doing something special and I cannot wait until we begin MAAC competition."
The Saints (1-2) got off to a strong start, placing first and third in the opening event of the 200 medley relay. The team of Ness, Anderer, Brittany Pavolko and Molly Chamberlain won the heat in a time of 1:49.98, which was just four-tenths of a second off the program record.
Ness and Anderer each would capture individual events later with Ness pacing the pool in the 100 back (1:00.63) and Anderer in the 100 breast (1:07.96). It was the second straight win in her first two collegiate meets in the 100 breast for Anderer, who last week set the school record in her debut.
"Britney went out there and really dominated again from start to finish," added Brown. "And Katie won a hard fought 100 back, out-swimming the field to the wall."
Other Siena individual event winners included Elizabeth Rice who won for a second straight week in 3-meter dives (213.15) and Caitlyn Biagioli who won the 400 IM with a time of 4:46.66. Additionally, Siena won the 400 free relay with the combination of Katie Carew, Meaghan Brauer, Allison O'Keefe and Veronica Cimilluca.
Kate Weaver won three events and Colleen Clark two for the Catamounts which improved to 4-0 for the first time in four seasons.
The Saints continue their month-long five meet road trip Wednesday evening at Holy Cross. Events are slated to get underway at 7 p.m. in Worcester, Mass.
