Final Stats
Siena men's soccer was dealt a heavy blow to its MAAC Tournament hopes when Canisius defeated it 2-1 Sunday afternoon in Buffalo, N.Y. The Golden Griffins scored the game winner on an own goal with less than three minutes left. The Saints stand sixth in the league standings with just one game left to play.
Siena needs to defeat Marist on the road and needs Fairfield and Iona each to beat both Niagara and Canisius this coming weekend to earn a spot in the MAAC Tournament.
Canisius (5-10-2, 4-3) took a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute on a goal by Sam Margetts. Alan McGreal crossed the ball and Margetts shot it under the crossbar.
Siena (8-7-3, 3-3-2) tied the game less than two minutes into the second half on freshman forward Sindre Ek's second goal in as many games. Junior Steve Covino sent the ball across to Ek who shot it past goalkeeper Luke Seymour. Siena's top three goal scorers this season are freshmen (Emery Welshman, Matthew Kadoch and Ek).
Canisius scored the game winning goal when a Siena defender headed a loose ball into his own net with 2:29 remaining in regulation.
The Golden Griffins outshot the Saints 12-9.
Phil Chabot (6-6-3) and Seymour each made five saves.
Siena returns to action at Marist this Friday at 7 p.m.
