POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Siena was in a must-win situation at Marist Friday evening to keep its MAAC Tournament hopes alive. But the Red Foxes scored in the fifth minute and never looked back, beating the Saints 3-0 and ending their season.
Marist (8-8-2, 4-4-1) took a 1-0 lead less than five minutes in when Joe Touloumis headed the ball forward and Stephan Brossard ran on to it and shot it past goalkeeper Phil Chabot. Siena (8-8-3, 3-4-2) had a chance to tie the game in the 16th minute on a corner kick. Sebastien Anzevui sent the ball in and it bounced in the box. Jannis Opalka hit the ball forward and Matthew Kadoch whirled around and shot it off the post.
The Red Foxes added to their lead in the 27th minute when they counter-attacked and Krystian Witkowski dribbled across the top of the box and bent a shot around the diving Chabot and into the far post side netting.
Marist made it 3-0 less than a minute into the second half when Brossard sent a through ball in for Kevin Brown and he shot it far post.
Siena outshot Marist 17-10 in the game and 10-4 in the second half, but couldn't break through. Goalkeeper Joe Pilla made six saves in the shutout while Chabot (6-7-3) made three saves in the loss.
Emery Welshman and Kadoch led the Saints with four shots each.
