Siena Loses Double-Overtime Heartbreaker

Feb. 25, 2009

Box Score

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - UAlbany's Joe Resetarits scored his fourth goal of the game with .3 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. The Great Danes won it on Joe Pompo's man-up goal in double-overtime and defeated Siena 8-7 Wednesday afternoon at Siena Turf Field. Goalkeeper Brent Herbst made 13 saves in the loss.

Siena's (0-2) Kenny Mazzone gave his team a 1-0 lead when he scored nine minutes into the first quarter. The Saints outshot the Great Danes 9-5, but only put two shots on goal. Freshman Chris D'Alberti added to the lead when he scored his first career goal just 40 seconds into the second quarter. Siena's defense stood tall in the first half, allowing just one goal on 11 shots. They took a 4-1 lead into halftime.

UAlbany (1-1) started the second half strong as Resetarits and Corey Small both scored goals in the first five minutes to cut the deficit to 4-3. Chris Zarins scored 35 seconds later to give Siena some breathing room, but Brian Caufield's goal at 3:41 of the third and Pompo's goal at 10:24 tied the game 5-5, the first time it was knotted all day.

Zarins put the Saints back on top 6-5 with his second goal of the game off a feed from freshman Chris Roth. Ryan Duggan made it a two-goal lead at 7:33 on D'Alberti's second assist of the game. But Resetarits scored with 3:40 left in regulation to bring the Great Danes within one.

With 11 seconds on the clock, Resetarits ripped a shot at the cage, but was stopped by Herbst. The Saints picked up the ground ball and heaved it down field, but goalkeeper John Carroll sprinted to the rolling ball at the defensive box and threw it back towards the Siena goal. The ball bounced three times through both teams until Resetarits picked it up and in one motion flicked it into the net with .3 seconds left.

In the first overtime, Carroll made two saves to extend the game. At the end of the period, the Saints were called for a slashing penalty and UAlbany would start the second overtime with a one minute man-up situation. Just 32 seconds in, Pompo ripped a shot from the right side that beat Herbst high and won the game 8-7.

Siena went 4-for-8 on man-ups while UAlbany went 3-for-10. The Saints also controlled face-offs, winning 10-of-16. Scott Montgomery won 9-of-15.

Siena returns to action on Sunday, March 1 against Presbyterian at noon. The game will be played at a neutral site on Long Island.
