Chris Zarins, Bryan Neufeld and Chris Roth all tallied hat-tricks as Siena defeated Presbyterian 15-2 and earned their first win of the season Sunday afternoon in Port Jefferson Station, N.Y. The Saints overwhelmed the Blue Hose with 40 shots in the game and scored the first seven goals.
Siena (1-2) got on the scoreboard just nine seconds into the game when senior Scott Montgomery won the faceoff and then scored his first goal of the season off a pass from Kenny Mazzone. The Saints poured on four more goals in the first quarter to lead 5-0 after one.
Presbyterian (0-4) broke the shutout bid in the second quarter when Siena turned it over and the Blue Hose capitalized as Billy Rinaldi scored his third goal of the season to make it 7-1 with 11 minutes left in the second quarter.
Mazzone responded less than a minute later with his second goal of the season, starting a six-goal run in a 23 minute span that put the Saints up 13-1.
Siena was able to play 39 players and have all four goalies see minutes in the cage. Junior Brent Herbst made three saves and allowed one goal in 30 minutes. Backup Tom Morr stopped all four shots he faced in 15 minutes.
Senior defenseman Chris Viviano caused two turnovers and had three ground balls.
This was Zarins' fifth 5+ point game in his career.
Siena returns to action on Tuesday when they host Loyola at 1 p.m. The Saints defeated the Greyhounds 5-4 last year in Baltimore, Md.
