ALBANY, N.Y. - Looking every bit the part of a team that equaled a league record for regular-season wins and spent much of the season in the nation's spotlight, the Siena men opened their quest for a second straight MAAC Tournament Championship Saturday with a 77-52 rout of Canisius. The Saints advance to play #5 seed Fairfield in Sunday's semifinal round at 6 p.m.
Kenny Hasbrouck scored all 16 of his points in the first half, helping Siena assume command 39-27 at the break. Hasbrouck spent much of the half running the offense as starting point guard Ronald Moore sat the final 13 minutes after picking up his second foul.
Edwin Ubiles scored 16 of his game-high 18 points after intermission to put the game away. He finished an alley-oop with 6:55 left that brought the crowd of 9,656 to its feet and gave Siena a 70-45 lead.
As electrifying as the offense was, the Saints' defense may have been even better. Just six days after allowing the Griffs to shoot 52% from the field for the second time this season in a 78-74 win in Buffalo, Canisius was limited to just 37% from the field in the first and second half.
Frank Turner scored 12 points, but had seven of Canisius' 22 turnovers. Moore on the other hand had five assists and no turnovers.
Ryan Rossiter controlled the paint, finishing with 13 points and 10 rebounds, and frontcourt mate Alex Franklin had nine boards and five points - two coming on an emphatic second half jam.
Siena also received a big lift from freshman Owen Wignot who became the eighth Saint to reach double figures this season. Wignot made all four of his field goals - including two three-pointers - and scored eight of his 10 points in the first half.
Siena shot 56% from the field in the second half and finished 46% for the game. The Saints added 14 assists and nine steals.
The Saints advance to the semifinal round for the 15th time in their 20 years as a league member. A win tomorrow would mark their third straight Championship game appearance and seventh overall.
