Joe Tavernese scored the lone goal to send Siena men's soccer past Vermont 1-0 in the season opener for both teams Tuesday afternoon in Burlington, Vt. Junior goalkeeper Steve Skonieczny made three saves to earn his eighth career shutout.
Vermont (0-1) outshot Siena (1-0) 15-3, but the Catamounts only put three shots on target. They also held a 10-2 advantage on corner kicks but couldn't cash in.
Tavernese's goal came in the 64th minute off a cross from freshman midfielder Emery Welshman. The fresh looking Saints had seven players see the field who didn't play last season. Junior Nick Viaggio missed all of 2008 due to injury and six freshmen - Welshman, Sean Sullivan, Daniel Alderstad, Sindre Ek, Matthew Kadoch and Chris Medina - made their collegiate debuts.
Siena returns to action on Sunday when it hosts Rhode Island in its home opener. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
