Final Stats
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena men's soccer battled its cross-town rival UAlbany to a 0-0 tie Wednesday afternoon at Siena Turf Field. The game featured 11 cards (with one ejection) and 41 fouls. Siena goalkeeper Phil Chabot made nine saves to earn his first career shutout.
Both defenses clamped down on the opponent and allowed very few quality scoring chances. UAlbany (0-6-2) outshot Siena in the first half 6-4, but the Saints came back with 15 shots in the second half. Siena's (4-2-1) best chances came from senior forward Bobby Di Filippo. In the 61st minute, Nick Viaggio went in hard on a tackle at midfield and hit the ball up to Joe Taverense. Tavernese ran at the defense and dished it off to Di Filippo on the right side but he shot it over the crossbar. Di Filippo had another chance three minutes later when he was breaking away from two defenders. He carried it across the top of the box and another defender came in and blocked his shot at the last second.
UAlbany had the best scoring chance of the game in the 67th minute when David Pinto sent in Shaun Kane on the right side. Kane did well with his first touch, putting it past the defender and creating a one-on-one with Chabot. He ripped a low shot, but Chabot went down and smothered the shot. One minute later, Kane (who was playing with a yellow card) was ejected and the Great Danes would play down a man for the remainder of the game (41 minutes and 40 seconds).
Siena outshot UAlbany 5-1 in overtime but could not break through. With two minutes left in overtime UAlbany could have stolen the win when Bo Jelovac sent a cross in from the left side and had wide open teammates at the penalty spot and the back post, but Chabot intercepted the cross and ended the threat.
The Saints owned corner kicks with a 12-2 advantage.
Siena returns to action on Saturday when it hosts UMass. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
