Siena outshot Sacred Heart 22-11 but couldn't cash in, losing 1-0 at Siena Turf Field Tuesday afternoon. Siena's first loss of the season came on a disheartening goal by Sacred Heart's Nemanja Filimonovic. He hit a 35-yard free kick that deflected off goalkeeper Steve Skonieczny's hands and into the net in the 32nd minute.
Siena (2-1) controlled play from start to finish, but only put six of 22 shot attempts on goal. Sacred Heart (1-1) goalkeeper Alex Fait made all six saves to earn the shutout win.
Freshman forward Sindre Ek was on all day as Siena's midfielders constantly fed the fleet-footed player in front of the defense. He registered a game-high six shots but couldn't find the net. One of Siena's best scoring chances was created by Sebastien Anzevui who sent Ek in on a through ball, but at the last second a defender tackled it away. Anzevui, Emery Welshman, Daniel Alderstad and Bobby Di Filippo each had three shots in the loss.
Sacred Heart's goal came off a free kick in the 32nd minute. Filimonovic hit a straight on shot and Skonieczny jumped to grab it. The ball flicked off his hands and trickled over the goal line. Skonieczny, who was announced as the MAAC Co-Defensive Player of the Week earlier in the afternoon, made three saves. He allowed no goals through the first 226:04 minutes of the season.
Siena returns to action on Friday when it hosts St. Bonaventure. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
