Loyola's 200 free relay team touched out that of Siena's by less than a second for third place in the final event of the day as the Saints swimming and diving team suffered a narrow 150-149 defeat Wednesday afternoon in Baltimore, Md. Britney Anderer, Brittany Pavolko and Katie Ness all won three events as Siena captured 10 of 16 overall in the team's first meet in over a month.
Trailing 144-138 going into the final event, Siena (6-5, 3-2) needed to take first and third place in the 200 free relay to win the meet. The team of Molly Chamberlain, Pavolko, Anderer and Ness held up the front end in capturing the event, but with Loyola taking second the battle came for third. But with a time of 1:44.79, the Greyhounds captured third place by just .69 seconds to take the one-point meet victory.
"We swam a great meet," said head coach Greg Brown. "The team gave everything it had had, but came up just short."
In addition to their performances in the 200 free relay, Anderer, Pavolko and Ness each won two more events. Anderer captured the 100 breast (1:09.06) and 200 medley relay (1:51.73), Pavolko paced the pool in the 100 fly (1:01.36) and 200 fly (2:21.99) and Ness was also part of the 200 medley relay winning squad while also taking an individual win in the 50 free (:24.96).
Other Siena multiple event winners included Chamberlain in the 200 free (1:58.44), Caitlyn Biagioli in the 200 medley relay and 100 free (:54.49) and Elizabeth Rice who swept the diving events by winning one-meter dives (235.35) and three-meters (202.95).
Siena returns to action at the Siena Swim Center Sunday for a quad meet against Bryant, NJIT and MAAC foe Canisius. Events start at 1 p.m.
