Siena's 52-game win streak when holding opponents to fewer than 70 points is over. Sophomore guard Carl Jones scored 17 points to lead Saint Joseph's to a 58-48 victory over the Saints here at Hagan Arena in Philadelphia on Friday afternoon.
Ryan Rossiter had 10 points and 15 rebounds to record his 41st career double-double for the Saints. It was Siena's second loss to an Atlantic 10 school on the road this week. Saint Bonaventure defeated Siena 82-79 in Olean Tuesday.
Both teams struggled offensively. Siena shot 21 of 64 (32 percent) from the field, including 2-of-17 from 3-point range. Saint Joseph's didn't fare much better, making 21 of 58 (36 percent) and 5 of 22 threes.
Freshman forward C.J. Aiken added 10 points, nine rebounds and four blocks for the Hawks (5-8), who held the Saints to their lowest point total of the season. It was the second straight win for Saint Joseph's which had lost six in a row before their win over Holy Cross Tuesday.
Freshman guard Rakeem Brookins, a Philadelphia native, led Siena (4-8) with 12 points despite being limited to just three minutes in the first half with foul trouble.
Saint Joseph's led 27-23 at halftime, but Siena took a 34-33 lead on Kyle Downey's layup with 14:37 to play. Langston Galloway scored on the Hawks next possession, igniting a 10-2 run, and Saint Joseph's led the rest of the way.
Siena had a chance to cut the lead to two, but Downey missed an open three with 2:52 to play, and the Saints trailing 50-45. The Hawks scored eight of the last 11 points to seal the victory.
Siena played without senior guard Clarence Jackson (ankle) and junior guard Kyle Griffin (shoulder).
The last time Siena lost when allowing fewer than 70 points was January 8, 2008 to Fairfield (53-52) - a span of 99 games.
