Siena men's golf had a strong showing in its spring opener, but fell in a tightly contested battle against Navy Saturday at the Wannamaker Course in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Navy (309) edged the Saints (315) by just six strokes.
Don DeNyse III led the Siena contingent on the par-72, 7,200 yard course with a +5 round of 77. Justin Deitz (78) and Jeffrey Smith (79) also shot sub-80 rounds despite a windy and highly challenging course at the PGA Village.
Freshmen Jess Esposito and John Van Vranken rounded out the Saints competitors with rounds of 81 and 84 respectively.
Navy was led by the trio of Ben Hayes, Robert Merkert and Tim Shield who all shot round-leading scores of 77.
The Saints return to action for their first invitational of 2010 with the Towson Fireline Invitational which gets underway Saturday in Graysonville, Md.
