March 27, 2010

Final Stats

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena scored three straight goals in the fourth quarter to pull away from Providence and defeat its old league member 11-9 in a non-conference game Saturday afternoon at Siena Turf Field. Sophomore Chris Roth tallied a career-high five points including a goal and an assist in the decisive final period. Senior Ryan Duggan had four points on one goal and three assists.

This is Siena's third straight win against Providence. The Friars left the MAAC after last season to join the newly formed Big East conference.

Siena (4-3) struck early and often as it led 4-0 in the first eight minutes of the game. But Providence (0-6) stormed back with three straight goals to end the period.

The Saints led the first 33 minutes of the game until Providence tied it 7-7 at the start of the third quarter on two goals by Kyle Dexter in a two minute span. Roth gave Siena an 8-7 lead five minutes later when he took his man right and fired the shot low and inside the left post.

Mike Feldberg tied the game once more for the Friars with one minute left in the third quarter.

John Rogener, Danny Martinsen and Roth all scored for the Saints in the fourth quarter.

Siena took seven penalties in the game, matching a season-high. All seven were one-minute penalties. Providence capitalized, converting on 2-of-5 extra-man opportunities.

Brent Herbst (4-2) made seven saves in the win. Two stops came in key spots on man-down in the second half.

Providence used three goalies, rotating them throughout the game. Tim Finnegan started and made six saves and allowed five goals in 31 minutes. Frank Cicero allowed two goals and didn't record a save in eight minutes and Chris Dzwilewski (0-1) made two saves and allowed four goals.

Sophomore Bryan Neufeld scored two goals and Rogener and Martinsen each had one goal and one assist.

Siena completes its three-game homestand next Saturday when it plays new MAAC member Detroit Mercy at 1 p.m.
