Freshman David Gushee shot a +1 round of 73 to secure the clubhouse lead following the first day of the Lafayette Invitational in Center Valley, Pa. Thanks in large part to Gushee's strong start, the Saints stand in sixth place in the 19 team field but are just five strokes off the overall lead.
Binghamton (310) leads the overall competition after 18 holes, but the Saints are well within striking distance following a team score of 315. In all, only 14 strokes separate the top-17 teams in what has turned out to be a highly competitive field.
Gushee shot a 36 on the front nine and a 37 on the back nine to lead the field by two strokes. Gushee stands at the top of the leaderboard heading into Sunday in an Invitational that includes 95 competitors.
Gushee and the Saints look to finish strong at tomorrow's final round.
