Men's Golf Places Sixth at Northeast Invitational

April 26, 2010

Sophomore Nick Miller tied a career-low with a round of 75 leading the Siena men's golf team to a sixth place finish at the rain-shortened Northeast Invite at the Green Valley Country Club in Portsmouth, R.I. In their final tuneup before next weekend's MAAC Championships, three Saints shot sub-80 rounds.

Host Rhode Island (302) won the par-71, 6830 yard event which was completed after just 18 holes due to the inclement weather in the area. The Saints (313) were in contention throughout, finishing just 11 strokes behind the Rams.

Miller shot a 38 on the front nine and finished strong with a 37 on the back to place tied for fourth - his highest ever finish in an invitational. Miller also fell only two strokes short of the individual championship, won by URI's Taylor Fontaine who shot a 72.

Junior Jeff Smith was second amongst Siena competitors and finished tied for 12th overall with a round of 77. Freshman David Gushee also cracked the top-20, coming in tied for 19th with a score of 78.

The Saints return to action for the 2010 MAAC Championships which begin Friday in Orlando, Fla. Siena will be taking aim for its fourth MAAC Championship and third in the past five years after finishing as the runner-up last season.
