Freshmen cross country runners Ryan Egan and Samantha D'Amato both led the Siena cross country teams in their first collegiate races, but it wasn't enough as Binghamton cruised past the Saints Saturday morning in Binghamton, N.Y.
"Today's meet in Binghamton was a good opportunity for our freshmen to get a race in after missing our season opener at Marist," head coach Alison Wade said.
Siena's top four in the men's race were freshmen. Egan ran the 8K in 27:37.5 and was followed by Brendan Gregg (28:01.2), Mike Thomas (28:47.6), Alex Liontas (29:17.1), David Ellsworth (29:57.8) and John Daley (34:31.2).
Ellsworth was a late addition, filling the spot of a teammate who withdrew just before the race.
D'Amato finished the 5K in 20:52.1. Meghan Yi (21:13.3), Breanna Zych (22:47.5), Christy Bak (22:57.9), Jessica Morelli (23:30.7), Casey Morelli (24:02.8) and Maria Casile (24:46.4) rounded out the women's race.
"This was another good opportunity to race a challenging course, and our team should look better with each race as the season progresses," Wade said. "Our upperclassmen did a great workout on Friday, and I'm looking forward to seeing what we can do with our full teams next weekend."
The Saints return to action in the NJIT Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park on September 19.
