Siena Cross Country competed in their penultimate race Saturday afternoon, running at the NCAA Northeast Regional in Buffalo, N.Y. The men's squad raced to a 30th place finish, while the women checked in 35th.
"We've had a taste of success this season, but it's left us hungry for a lot more," said head coach Alison Wade. "We'll head back to Van Cortlandt Park next weekend, see what we can do, and then start building for the future."
The men's team posted its best regional finish since 2005 and finished ahead of MAAC rival Niagara. Buffalo native Brendan Gregg again paced the men's squad, running in a time of 34:41.6 in the 10K.
Senior Ian Donnelly was the Saints' second finisher (35:24.2), while Ryan Egan ran third (35:28.9).
The women's side also had one of their best regional finishes in recent years, running their fastest since 2008.
Samantha D'Amato set the pace for the Saints in the 6K with a time of 24:43.0. Buffalo native Chelsea Needham was second amongst the Siena women (25:00.9) while Cara Riley was third (25:20.5).
"We rarely race in Buffalo, so I was pleased that our two Buffalo natives Brendan and Chelsea were able to run in front of their home crowd," added Wade. "Brendan was a consistent performer for us as he has been all season, and Chelsea ran really well considering that back problems have hampered her training significantly this season."
The Saints will put a bow on the 2011 season next Saturday when they compete in the ECAC/IC4A Championships in the Bronx.
