Siena freshman Evan Hymes was named MAAC Rookie of the Week today. Hymes averaged 20 points while shooting 52% from the field and 50% from 3-point range in the first two games of his collegiate career, wins over Navy and Mount St. Mary's.
The point guard's marquee effort came in his first road game when he scored 30 points at Mount St. Mary's, the most by a Siena freshman in a game since February of 2005. Hymes made 9-17 field goals and 3-5 3-pointers in the 12-point win.
Forced into the starting rotation in his collegiate debut against Navy due to a season-ending back injury to Rakeem Brookins, Hymes turned the ball over just three times total in Siena's two wins to start the year. More impressive, Hymes left both games early due to leg cramps, and averaged just 28.5 minutes per game.
Iona's Scott Macahdo was named MAAC Player of the Week after helping the Gaels to a fifth place finish in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off. Machado had three double-doubles, recording 46 points (15.3/g), 41 assists (13.7/g), a 51.5% shooting effort from the field and just six turnovers (2.0/g)
Hymes and the Saints hit the hardwood at home tonight, facing St. Bonaventure at 7 p.m.
